Story Development

Story development in scriptwriting is a rigorous, active process that turns even a vague idea into something containing an interesting narrative structure. It includes first of all the conceptualization of a core premise, well-rounded characters, and distinct motivations and arcs. All this goes into mapping out of the plot by acts and scenes for a coherent flow of the storyline, to keep the viewer enticed. The process includes the construction of detailed outlines as treatments, which actually work as blueprints of what a script will entail. Throughout the drafting process, a writer refines a storyline by using feedback and revising to create better dramatic tension, pacing, and emotional resonance. Good story development also explores themes, subplots, and dialogue—indeed, the construction of an entire richly detailed world that serves a script’s greater vision.
