Character tone & voice

In creating dialogue, it’s important to write each person’s way of talking skillfully because it leads them to be more believable when they are involved in conversation which holds interest. There should be a distinctive quality about the way each person speaks based on who they are in terms of personality traits, past experiences as well as what has influenced them.

For example what vocabularies would they use if at all? Do they have any specific intonations? Are there any characteristics linked with their dialects? These are some issues that can help you easily distinguish one character from another thereby making such people very easy to recall in any situation. Consider two characters: one that is confident and assertive might speak clearly and authoritatively through brief explanations unlike another who may seem uncertain because they talk timidly or choose their words with care.

In addition, reflect upon how people might talk in different tones depending on their mood or circumstances thereby increasing the richness of their speech. They say it is necessary to be consistence, as they voice may slightly vary with time and story elaboration. By means of accurate depiction and characterization, a good author imbues their heroes with breath and produces a speech that is perceived as real and strikes the reader’s soul.
