Juxtaposition

The juxtaposition in screenwriting combines some of the contrasting elements on purpose, allowing the construction of strong emotions or underlining certain ideas. This technique helps attract attention to the dissimilarities between personal goals, which move heroes to act in a specific way, or to the states of mind or places they happen to be, which contributes to better understanding of the plot by the audience. Such juxtaposition of scenes, images, or lines of dialogue can develop meaning in the text at many levels and create big emotional effects in an audience.

The contrast between such things as light and darkness, order and chaos, past and present produces a tension like that between light and darkness, chaos and order, or past and present—tension that adds depth and intricacy to the narrative. Juxtaposition is just such a powerful tool in scriptwriting. Visually engaging stories will stay with audiences long after the credits roll.
